Strings, Tension, and Grips: The Quick Gear Tune-Up

You do not need new equipment to feel a difference. Small adjustments to strings, tension, and grip size can transform control and comfort.

Players often keep the same setup for months. Before you replace a racket, try a few simple tweaks that are cheaper and faster.

Strings: match feel to your swing

Polyester strings give more control and spin but feel firmer. Multifilaments feel softer and protect your arm. If your arm feels sore, switch to a softer string before lowering tension.

Tension: small changes matter

Lower tension adds power and comfort, higher tension adds control. A 2-pound change is noticeable. If the ball feels dead or you are struggling to clear the net, go down 2 pounds.

Grip size: avoid over-squeezing

A grip that is too small makes you squeeze. A grip that is too large limits wrist mobility. Use the finger-width test between your fingertips and palm to confirm the fit.

Quick gear checklist

  • Restring every 20 to 30 hours of play.
  • Replace your overgrip when it gets slick.
  • Check string tension after any big weather change.

Track your setup and results for a few weeks. The best gear decision is the one you can connect to your on-court performance.
